iberty Lake, seventeen miles; Priest Lake, seventy-eight miles;Spirit Lake, forty-three miles; Coeur dAlene, thirty-two miles;and Twin Lakes, thirty-three miles. The mountains are visible either to the north or the east. They are neither as lofty nor as rugged as the Cascades andOlympics, but they are nevertheless beautiful. The highest peakin eastern Washington is Mount Spokane, 5,808 feet, twentymiles northeast of the city. From its summit one may look outinto the three northwestern states of Oregon, Idaho and Wash-ington, and into the province of British Columbia; and countseventeen different lakes and rivers. Towards the north are the Okanogan Highlands with thevalleys of the Pend Oreille and Colville, while the Bitter Rootmountains are approached on the east. The roads westwardand southward lead past well cultivated gardens, green meadowsand groves, until finally is spread before one a sea of grain—continuous wheat fields—the Big Bend to the west and the Pa-louse to the south.
Text Appearing After Image:
INLAND EMPIRE WHEAT FIELDS. State of Washington 77 Towards the east the Apple Way, one of the most remark-able roads in America on account of the high class material ofwhich it is constructed, enters the Spokane Valley, crossesthe state of Idaho and connects with roads leading to the Na-tional Parks in Montana. This valley more than thirty miles inlength, with an average width of eight miles, comprises a levelirrigated country cut up into intensive garden and orchardtracts. Thousands are supported in affluence by raising apples, pears, cherries, smallfruits, garden truck, poultry, and livestock. The advant-ages of abundantwater power, prox-imity to a great city, rapid transit facil-ities, and a healthfulclimate, are quicklytransforming the re-gion into one of at-tractive suburbanhomes. The Spokane Riverdrops 1,280 feet in adistance of 100 miles, and 130 feet withinthe city limits, fall-i n g precipitously 70 feet in the heart of the business section, over a dam200 feet wide. On both sides
