oidentify Useit with the Elim of the Bible. I cannot bringmyself to believe Moses would leave such a fine oasis asGharandel for the poor pools of Useit. This wady does runto the sea, but at some distance down is quite impassable tocamels, and quite impassable for a host. We may dismissthat as a route for the Israelites. Then, seven miles furtheron, another wady, also running to the sea—a wild gorge, equallyimpassable to camels and difficult for a pedestrian. That maybe dismissed. The scenery here is very grand, though thehills are wild and strange in form. Now we come to WadyShebeikeh (the valley of the net), a labyrinth of cliffs, oftenquite vertical, but splendid scenery for an artist. Now we cometo a most critical point. In Numb, xxxiii. lo we read: And they journeyed from Elim, andpitched by the Red Sea. So down Wady Taiyibeh they nnisthave gone, as we have shown already. The other wadies areimpassable, and Wady Taiyibeh is broad and open. This versein Numbers is most invaluable. Had critics, who have soughtto throw doubt on the Bible narrative, known the country, theywould not have sneered at the ignorance of Moses, they, forsooth, being so much wiser than the divinely-inspired leader! But why did Moses take the lower route ? For the best of allreasons. The main route (which the Bible shows he did nottake) leads to Wady Nasb, Serabit-el-Khadim, and Maghara. What if it did? Why, there were the well-known mines, colonized and worked by Egyptians, held by garrisons ofsoldiers, with strong positions and passes ! And so Moses, skilled in
