THE GOOSE CONTINUED TO WOKKY AND CONFUSE THE ASSASSINS UNTIL THEY FLED. his intended prey, when the goose, in a franticattempt to reach the sentry-box, ran its head andneck between the soldiers legs just as the pur-suer was on the point of seizing it. Fortunately,the guard could use his bayonet without makinga disturbance, and he did this to such good ad-vantage that the pursuit v.-as soon ended. The t-esrued goose, evidently animated by theliveliest gratitude, rubbed its head against its de-liverers legs, and performed various other joyfuland kitten-like antics. Then, deliberately takingup its residence at the garrison post, it walked upand down with the sentry while he was on duty,and thus accompanied each successive sentry whoappeared to patrol that beat. About two months later the goose actuallysaved the life of its particular friend in a veryremarkable way.
