n any other ofour native grasses ; for although a variety found ata great elevation on the Clova mountains, and calleddepaaperata, has numerous, pale green, one-floweredspikelets, yet our grass has usually a tint as deep asthat of the myrtle leaf, Avith a dark tinge of bluish-purple spread over it, and large purple anthers. Itsspikelets are small but numerous, two or three flowered,and the panicle is from three to six inches long, withnumerous waved branches. The leaves grow eitherfrom the root, or rise from the knot at the lower part ofthe stem, and are long, slender, and taper-pointed.The long straws of this grass are said by Withering tobe made, in country places, into carpet-brushes, andtwisted together they form a durable line used by fisher-men. This grass has manylong, thin, bright shining leaves, and a stem about afoot high. Its flowers appear in May and June; theirglumes are of a purplish-brown colour, w4th a whitemargin. It is found in shady places and woods inhilly and mountainous countries, and is frequent in theneighbourhood of Malvern. Cattle do not relish it.(PI. 256, fig. 5.) 2.
