Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist - geograph.org.uk - 1415200.jpg |
English: The Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist On Wednesday, August 9, 1848, the Catholics of Manchester and Salford celebrated the opening of a new church which was originally built to replace St Mary's on Mulberry Street. Designed by Matthew Hadfield of Sheffield it was the first Catholic Church since the Reformation to be made cruciform, or built in the form of a cross, two hundred feet in length, and with a lofty spire two hundred and forty feet high, at that time the highest steeple ever built in Lancashire. The great church was elevated to Cathedral a few years later. |
