There is no mentionof Bethel in the New Testament, but Josephus re-cords that it was taken by Vespasian (Bell. Jud.,IV,ix, 9). Eusebius mentions the place as a village. Itis commonly identified nowadays with Beitin. Theruins of several Christian ciiurches on the spot wouldindicate that in the Middle Ages it had again grownto some importance. The name Bethel is alsoread in Jos., xii, 16 and I K., xxx, 27; it is probablyanother name for Bethul (Jos., xix, 4), a city of thetribe of Simeon, the site of which is uncertain. There died Rachel, Jacobs wife (Gen., xxxv,19); David was born there (I Kings, xvii, 12), and many-other Biblical personages. There was enacted thegracious idyO of Ruth and Booz. There, above all,the Saviour was born, a descendant of IDavid, andfrom this fact the humble village has acquired un-paralleled glory. According toJohn Cassian, it was in a monastery of Bethlehemthat the office of Prime was instituted. As early asthe second century it was indicated by St. JustinMartyr, a native of Neapolis (Nilblous), as the placeof the Nativity. About A. D. 330 Constantine theGreat built a basilica on this site.
