Crouching in the far corner of the room, lash-ing its tail, its evil eyes fixed upon them, wasthe lion Wallace. ^^Wow! breathed Teddy. Phil with eyes fixed upon the lion reached backone hand and tried the door behind him. It waslocked. **Teddy, dont make any sudden moves, cau-tioned Phil in a low voice. ^Were locked in.Give me your torch. Now edge over to thatopen window and drop out. We cant both tryit, or Wallace will be upon us in a flash. Whenyou get out, run for the lot. Eun as you neverran before. Get the men here. Have themrush Wallaces cage here. Be careful until youget out. Those people have locked us in. I

Phil Thrust the Torches Toward Wallace.245 IN DIXIE LAND 247 shouldnt dare open the door anyway, now, forhed catch ns before we could get out. I knowthe ways of these tricky cats. ^Thil, hell kill you! *^He wont. Ive got the torches. Theyrethe best weapons a man could have—they andthe whip. Teddy edged toward the window while Philwith a stern command to the lion to ^charge!at the same time cracking the whip and thrust-ing the torches toward the beast, checked therush that Wallace seemed about to make. Teddy dropped from the window a momentlater. Then began an experience for Phil For-rest that few boys would have had the courageto face. Not for an instant did the Circus Boy lose hispresence of mind. He took good care not tocrowd Wallace, giving him plenty of room, con-stantly talking to him as he had frequently heardthe animals keeper do, and keeping the beastsmind occupied as much as he could.
