Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Cock Inn Sign, Oughtibridge - geograph.org.uk - 829371.jpg |
English: The Cock Inn Sign, Oughtibridge. At one point the Pub Sign actually depicted a Cockerel which was incorrect as the Cock Inn is named after a Cock Horse. A 'Cock Horse' was a second horse hired to help pull heavily laden carts up steep hills and was detached when the top of the hill was reached. As only one horse is shown on the sign it is still incorrect but much nearer the original meaning than a Cockerel!!!! The sign depicts the Brewery as being Rawsons which is an 'Old Sheffield Brewery' The Rawson family was involved in all sorts of businesses a including Iron and Steel, Tanning and Brewing (but not Liquorice Allsorts). The Almshouses in Wadsley, were founded with a donation from Hannah Rawson. 749100 |
