THE CUBA R E V I 11 W 15 The churches, both in Ilabana and the country districts, as a rule are constructed of heavy masonry. The schools in the city are built of masonry, while in the country masonry is used with wood and tile roofs. Put)Hc buildings are constructed of stone and brick masonry or re- inforced concrete. Modern factories and sugar mills are usually built of steel frames covered with corrugated iron or asbestos lumber. Some reinforced concrete is also used. Hotels have steel frames with masonry walls and partitions and reinforced concrete or other fire-resistive floors. CIIAR.VCTKR OF SIHSOIL IX TIIK CITIES. Most of the present city of Habana is built ou coral reef. The city i)roi)er —that is, the old city—^was founded on three islands or coral reefs, and the .spaces between these were filled in. In these spaces some clay is found and a part of these low areas was marshy grountl. These natural conditions of subsoil render it necessary to make special studies for the larger buildings when they are to be constructed in the lower part of Habana over the fills which have been made with the development of the city.
