dPrix dHonneur in 1867. This collectionafter the death of Preterre was purchasedby the late Dr. Lecaudey, a lifelong friendof Dr. Michaels, and presented to the Den-tal School of Paris. The entire collection,with the exception of a very few pieces oflater date, was the work of Michaels whenhe was an assistant under contract in theemploy of Preterre, who scoured the Parishospitals to furnish material for his Yankeemechanic, and the result was used to adver-tise the Preterre house. His artistic genius and his wonderful skillas a technician attracted the attention ofthe late Dr. Thos. W. Evans, who formedan association with him which resulted inthe sending of Dr. Michaels to Vienna,Austria, where he opened an office for thepractice of dentistry in the mutual interestof himself and Dr. Evans, in which place andconnection he continued to practice until1875, when he returned to Paris and beganthe practice of his profession there uponhis own account. His constructivegenius, his insatiable desire for knowledge,and his keen interest in all scientific mattersdrove him into the investigation of the prob-lems of nature as they came under his notice,and he devoted his life and energies to theirsolution. In the more immediate interestsof his professional life he devoted much timeto hospital service, to giving instruction inthe dental schools of Paris, and the conductof a large private practice, yet he foundtime to devote what may be fairly designatedas his surplus energies to many things notdirectly connected with his immediate pro-fessional work.
