TILL LILEH (.LATE RETENTIOX. 921 petroleum sixteen grains, with alcoholfifteen grains, and with ether ten grains.This likewise requires an exclusion ofair and is independent of atmosphericpressure. In the retention of a full upper den-ture by adhesion, we are dealing witha combination of the adhesion betweentwo solid surfaces, those of the plate andthe mucous membrane, and of each withan intervening thin film of saliva. The rare cases of dry mouth in which thesecretions are very scanty, or in the caseof patients to whom atropin is beingadministered, who note at once the dif-ference in the retention of their plate.The saliva, then, has some part in thisproblem, and variations in its viscosityaffect slightly the degree of adhesion,but ordinarily it requires no special con-sideration save the recognition of itsfunction.

condition involves not simply the attrac-tion between two solids or between asolid and a liquid, but it is a mixture ofthe two, and the adhesive force is strongerthan either would be separately. It iscertainly stronger than that between asolid and a liquid, as this is determinedby the cohesion of the liquid, which isin most instances less than the adhesiveforce. We may easily demonstrate thatit is less than the adhesion between twosolids in the case of an upper denture,by thoroughly drying the mucous mem-brane and inserting the plate equallydry, pressing it into place, and request-ing the patient to withdraw any remain-ing air between the two by suction withthe tongue and throat muscles, when theadhesion will be found to be less thanwhen both are wet with saliva.
