English: The Dorset Shepherd inscription, Durngate Street. This inscription to the statue lies behind. William Barnes (1801-1886) whose verse appears was Dorset's famous dialect poet. He and his wife Julia first lived in a house in Durngate Street on his return to Dorchester from Mere. William's statue stands outside St Peter's Church Dorchester and he later lived at Winterborne Came Rectory while he was vicar of there and of Whitcombe.
