The Tartar en-voy replies with spirit, and is about to withdraw fromthe imperial presence when Ei Toten strives to pacifyhim. THE BATTLES OF KOKUSENYA. 75 faction for Go Sankeis insult to his sovereign and him-self. The envoy takes his departure. The next scene is in the apartment of the emperorsyounger sister. The emperor appears, accompanied bytwo hundred youthful inmates of his harem, half ofwhom bear branches of flowering plum and half ofcherry. They draw up on each side of the stage. Theemperor tells his sister of lii Totens noble self-sacrificeand again urges the latters suit for the hand of theprincess, which had previously been rejected by her,suggesting that her answer should depend on the resultof a battle between the plum and cherry squadrons ofladies. The princess agrees to this and puts herself atthe head of the plum party, who, acting in collusionwith the emperor, allow themselves to be defeated. Go Sankei now rushes in, clad in full armor, and withhis lance drives off both squadrons.- lie remonstrateswith the emperor for setting an example which, iffollowed by the people, would lead to disastr
