His machine weighed 350 pounds, andhad a series of aeroplanes arranged somewhat likethe slats of a Venetian blind. These slats were 22inches wide, and curved in imitation of the wing ofan albatross. He constructed a propeller to drivethis machine, but never succeeded in making it self-sustaining. Other recent machines are the Zappe-lin air-ship and Santos-Dumonts dirigible balloon. Notable investigations on atmospheric move-ments have been made by Helmholtz of Berlin, andLord Rayleigh of England, each of whom has con-tributed to the literature on the subject.
