Description
English: The English corvette 'Fly' outside Sydney harbour

The ‘Fly’ is shown anchored off Sydney in starboard-broadside view, flanked either side by other shipping, with the city’s harbour-front buildings behind.

Between November 1841 and July 1846, ‘Fly’ was commanded by Captain Francis Price Blackwood on the East Indies station, surveying the Torres Straits and northern coast of Australia. Given this, a dating of c.1843 seems reasonable. The vertically-striped yellow-red flag she flies from her foretop has so far eluded identification.

Inscribed: (above) “Marine-Album 1” and (below, in German and English) “Die englische Corvette Fly auf der Rhede von Sidney (Australien). The english Corvet [sic] the Fly on the road of Sidney (Australia)”.
