gnoria, on which thePalazzo Vecchio and the Loggia de Lanza, filledwith great groups of sculpture, are located. From this piazza are the entrances to the grandcouncil chamber of the Vecchio, where standsthe colossal statue of Savonarola, and from whichopen the rooms of the Medici family, filled withtheir treasures. Here, too, is the entrance tothe Uffizi gallery, and a little street near runsdown to Santa Croce, in which are the tombs ofMichael Angelo, Alfieri, a monument to Dante,and other wonderful groups. Just beyond thePalazzo Vecchio lies the famous Ponte Vecchio,over the Arno, — the bridge lined with the shopsof jewellers and vendors of bric-a-brac. IDYLLIC HOURS golden background in the late afternoon, andfollowing this promenade one comes to theCascine, which is to Florence what the Pincianhill is to Rome. Florence is so rich in art thatone knows not where to begin in speaking of itstreasures. One of the most interesting churchesis that of Sante Croce, and it is one of the firstto which the tourist turns his steps. It datesfrom the year 1297, and was commenced by themonks of St. Francis, who were under the specialprotection of Pope Gregory IX. Giotto becamemaster of the work in 1334, but the facade ismodern, and was completed as late as 1863.Over the grand entrance is a bas-relief repre-senting the Elevation of the Cross, by GiovarmiDupre, of Siena, who is also the sculptor of afine statue of the Madonna Addolorata.
