Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Furness Shipyard, Haverton Hill - geograph.org.uk - 10435.jpg |
English: The Furness Shipyard, Haverton Hill. Teesside once had a thriving ship building industry. The Furness Shipyard had twelve berths and its location on the bend of the river provided easy launching for ships up to 750 feet in length. The first ship to be launched was the 10,000 ton S.S. War Energy on 29th April 1919. The shipyards closed in 1969 by which time its most recent orders had been for bulk supertankers. This photo is taken from south of the river looking north. This stretch of the river is named on the 1915 OS map as "Bamlet's Bight or Cocklegate". |
