it has evidently escaped his memory), whowas the first to tell me that one of my plants hadchanged hands at 200 guineas. The price hasevidently given Mr. Thomson some courage, for Iam glad to see that he has been able since to realise asimilar sum for a superb variety of Catlleya Mossix. All this goes to show what varietal distinctions willcommand, and the necessity for keeping their designa-tions decided. Our good friend, the Doctor of Bridgeof Allan, naturally is very fond of a good Orchid, andespecially of a good variety of Orchid, but I recollecthim looking aghast at me when I asked 25 guineasfor Cattleya Mendelii pulcherrima. He thought Iwas a wonderfully expensive fellow to deal with ; Ihave no doubt he has changed his opinion now.James Anderson. Treatment of Orchids after Flowering. As is the case generally withOrchids this species is apt to vary considerably—thefine form, O. Cervantesii decorum, exhibited by SirTrevor Lawrence at South Kensington some yearsago to wit. That form had flowers nearly threetimes the size of the typical variety, and I did mybest to figure it faithfully in the Floral I^la^azine atthe time (F. M., t. 254), but fine as that variety un-doubtedly was, the exquisite effect of its concentricmarkings was well-nigh lost, the purity of the lipbeing likewise invaded with colour. Well and vigor-ously grown this plant is very beautiful, and a com-post of fibrous peat and living sphagnum moss seemsto suit it best. Care must be taken to drain the potthoroughly, and to give abundance of water when theplant is growing. F. IV. B. Cattleya Mendelii pulcherrima. Mr. Bullen, at p. 694, refe
