CharlesSharpe, and Charles Sharpe & Co., Ltd., forthe past 64 years, is retiring from active workin the management of the business, of whichhe is a member of the board of directors. Bicentenary of the St. PetersburgBotanic Garden.—The Imperial Botanic Gardenat St. Petersburg was founded in the year 1713,by Peter the Great, and is this year celebrating artificially coloured to resemble copper sulphate.An inspector of the Board recently purchasedsamples of blue vitriol for wheat dressing,which, upon analysis, showed an average contentof 12.5 per cent, of blue vitriol only, the re-mainder of the substance being green vitriolcoloured with Prussian blue. It should be bornein mind that the value of the material sold inthese cases is in proportion to the amountof sulphate of copper present, and ironsulphate can only be regarded as an adulterant.It is advisable, therefore, in obtaining sulphateof copper to demand from the seller a guaranteeof 98 per cent, purity, and to avoid purchasing

Sale of Books.—At a recent sale of booksconducted at the Marchmont House (Duns), Mrs.Blackwells Herbal realised 10 guineas; Parkin-sons Theatrum Botanicum 2^ guineas; andParadisus £20. Gerards Herbal, 3rd edition,and several other rare gardening books were alsowell sold. Some forty representatives ofLondon booksellers were at the sale ; the libraryoontained many valuable books, of which therewere in all about 8,000. The house and estate its bicentenary. The fete will probably be heldbetween the 21st and 25th inst., but the exactdate is not yet decided. The festivities will lastfor two
