y. Tie profits of underwritershave been great in this district and it is considered one ofthe best and most profitable fields in their business; rateshave been correspondingly low : this is entirely owing toour abundant water supply and perfectly organized fireservice. The force on the North Side consists at present of nineengine companies, each supplied with a steam fire-engine ofthe latest and most perfect design, and a hose tender; twoengine companies with hose wagon, and two hook and laddercompanies; and there are also three hook and ladder truckswith full equipments connected with the engine companies. The uniformed force consists of 22 officers and 94 men,making a total of 116 of all ranks. New companies are soonto be established and buildings erected at Forrest Avenuenear 163d Street; 159th Street and Railroad Avenue ; GrandAvenue, Woodlawn Heights; Scofield Avenue, City Island;and proceedings are under way for a new site for EngineCompany No. 61, in the village of Westchester.
