Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Hampton Ferry (geograph 2666929).jpg |
English: The Hampton Ferry, looking north-west across the River Avon at the point where the hand-operated ferry runs across the river to the caravan site below Clark's Hill. A chain is fixed to winches at either side of the river and rests on the river bed to allow boating to pass through. When in use, the chain is winched up to the taut position and the operator pulls the ferry across. A ferry was first established here by the Monks of Evesham Abbey in the 13th century as a short-cut to their newly planted vineyard on Clark's Hill. A ferry has been running here ever since. |
