Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Museum of English Rural Life. The museum was established in 1951 by the University of Reading LinkExternal link . It moved from the Whiteknights campus to this location at Redlands Road in 2005. The building shown here was originally the home of Sir Alfred Palmer, who worked in the family biscuit-making firm Huntley & Palmers. Built in 1880 to a design by Alfred Waterhouse, it was called East Thorpe. Sir Alfred gave the house to the university, it was extended and in 1911 became St Andrew's Hall which was used as a student residence until 2001. In addition to the former hall, the museum has a large modern exhibition building and landscaped garden.
