In the library of CorpusChristi College, Cambridge, may stillbe seen this very manuscript. Alfredhimself wrote up this copy of thechronicle for about twenty years, hiswork coming down to the year 891.In it, writes one, we have the firstvernacular history of a Teutonic peo-ple ; there is nothing like it in Ger-many nor in Scandinavia, nor amongthe Low Dutch. As we read it westand at the fountain-head of a liter-ature, which in breadth, extent andsplendor of masterpieces is sur-passed by none. The Peterbor-ough copy, which was carried onuntil 1154 and then dies out in themiddle of a sentence, was the littlerunnel through which our mothertongue was safely conveyed throughthe wilderness of Norman oppres-sion.
