William Watts Sherman was born at Albany, N. Y., Aug. 4,1842; he was son of Watts Sherman, born Feb. 22, 1809, and diedFeb. 20, 1865, in the Island of Madeira. Watts Shermans firstwife was Lois Sarah Turner, who died in Albany, Aug. 4, 1838, inher 21st year. His children were all of the second wife, SarahMaria Gibson, whom liemarried Feb. 2, 1841. She was born Feb.8, 1816, and died Mar. 10, 1878, the daughter of Henry BickerGibson (1783-1863) and Sarah Sherman, his wife, who was daughterof Watts Sherman and Olivia Gillson, born in Utica, N. Y., Sept.15, 1796; married Dec. 9, 1812. He was born in Reading, Pa.,April 13, 1783; his father removed to Saratoga, N. Y., and he toUtica, N. Y., in 1805.
