Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe North Side of Agricola Tower - geograph.org.uk - 491631.jpg |
English: The North Side of Agricola Tower Located in the Inner Bailey of the Chester Castle complex, the Agricola Tower is the oldest part of the original castle to survive the 18th century demolition and re-building by Thomas Harrison. The upper floor houses the Norman chapel of St Mary de Castro and has some fine, recently discovered, ceiling paintings. I believe the tower was refaced in the time of Harrison, and this seems to be confirmed by the stonework on the left hand side, which is a lot rougher than the side facing the camera. The only resident today seems to be a pigeon who can be seen sitting on the top window ledge. The building is in the care of English Heritage and is often open - but check before travelling. |
