o Ambassador Norman H. Davis(Vanderbilt) for his efforts on behalfof peace at an informal gathering May24 in the Woodrow Wilson MemorialLibrary, New York City. Hamilton FishArmstrong, president of the WoodrowWilson Foundation, made the presenta-tion speech, reminding the audience thatthe medal of the association had beenawarded this year to Mr. Davis and toSecretary of State Cordell Hull, but thatMr. Davis was in Europe when the for- mal presentation was made at the annualdinner on April 5. Today we seize the first opportunityto honor him as we wished to do lastmonth, Mr. Armstrong explained. Hecited Mr. Davis for his long and variedservices in the cause of better interna-tional relationship—a service which goesback to his association with PresidentWilson at the Paris Peace Conference—and specifically for his efforts in behalfof peace. He said that history would give toWoodrow Wilson a place among thegreat men of all time. Wilson believed,he continued, that two requisites for apeaceful world were, first, a removal ofeconomic barriers and the establishmentof an equality of trade conditions amongnations, and, second, a reduction andlimitation of armaments. The deplor-able situation that prevails in world af-fairs today is largely due to a failure toadhere to that program of economic free-dom and political appeasement.
