The tunnel was evi-dently planned by someone who hadintimate knowledge of and experiencein military matters, for an enemycould be held at bay with the greatestease from the vantage secured by thepeculiar plan followed in its construc-tion. At a distance of about fortyfeet from the point of the angle, thetunnel here assuming a labyrinthiancharacter, was constructed a miniaturefortress and armory.
