The road from Eppstein to Konigstein leads through a pictu-resque ravine to Fischbach (lJ/2 M.), then crosses a lofty table-land to Schneidhain (2 M.), and ascends to (l/2 M.) Koenigstein(Lowe; Stadt Amsterdam). Above the village is the ruined fortressof the same name (1406 ft.), demolished by the French in 1796.From 1581 it belonged to the electors of Mayence, whose armsare over the entrance. After the re-capture of Mayence in 1793(p. 88), it was employed as a state-prison. *View from theplatform similar to that from the Falkenstein (see below). TheDuke of Nassau possesses a handsome villa in the vicinity. Hy-dropathic estab. also here. Omnibus to Soden see p. 135; di-ligence to Hochst 3 times daily. The ruin of Falkenstein (1631 ft.) crowns a well wooded hill,IV2 M. E., and commands a fine view. It was the family seatof the powerful Archb. The pedestrian leaves the Frank-furt and Limburg road l/2 M. from Kbnigstein, turns r., crossesthe Little Feldberg (2669 ft.) in i hr., and in l/t hr. morereaches the Great Feldberg. The traveller who is provided witha guide should quit the high road immediately beyond the churchof Kbnigstein, and cross the meadow to the r.; then after >/4 hr.enter the wood. Or, better still, this shorter, but more pre-cipitous path may be taken in returning, and the castle of Falken-stein be visited on the way. The summit of the * Great Feldberg (2883 ft.), the highestpeak of the Taunus, consists of quartzose rock, the slopes oftalc and clay-slate. In fine weather the view is very extensive,comprehending the Rhine and the Main to the E. as far as theInselsberg, the Rhbngebirge and Spessart; S.
