Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Rhymer Stone According to legend, Thomas the Rhymer fell asleep here beneath a tree on the side of the Eildon Hills. When he awoke he met the Queen of the Fairies and was taken to Fairyland for what seemed to him like a few days. He was then brought back to the Eildon Tree and found that 7 years had elapsed. Thomas was a real man, Thomas Learmonth of Erceldoune (now Earlston) Castle, who lived from 1220-1297. The inscription on the stone reads:-

THIS STONE MARKS THE SITE OF THE EILDON TREE WHERE LEGEND SAYS THOMAS THE RHYMER MET THE QUEEN OF THE FAIRIES AND WHERE HE WAS INSPIRED TO UTTER THE FIRST NOTES OF THE SCOTTISH MUSE
