Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Rising Sun behind Stockton House - geograph.org.uk - 686585.jpg |
English: The Rising Sun behind Stockton House On the left of the hillside behind Stockton House can be seen the Rising Sun badge, the emblem of the Australian armed forces who were garrisoned in the area during the First World War. Their headquarters was then at Stockton House, and it was the idea of the garrison commander to carve a visible Australian mark on the English countryside. This emblem of the Australian Imperial Force as they were then known, was carved by Australian troops during their sojourn in the area, whilst awaiting embarkation to fight in France. A full account of the Anzac presence in the area during this time, is on two notice boards on the road opposite Stockton house. |
