Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe River Eachaig, from a footbridge - geograph.org.uk - 925493.jpg |
English: The River Eachaig, from a footbridge In order to gain access to Benmore Botanic Garden from the Garden's entrance and ticket office, visitors cross this river by means of a footbridge; this photo, looking upstream, was taken from that bridge.
The river name, "Eachaig", is explained in "The Celtic Placenames of Scotland" (by W.J.Watson, 1926) as meaning "horsie": it is the Gaelic "each" (meaning "horse"), combined with a diminutive suffix "-a(i)g". The river flows from Loch Eck. The similarity of "Eck" to "Eachaig" is no accident; their names have a common root: Loch Eck is the "Horse Loch", again from the Gaelic "each". |
