H Strange Hake 83 and swampy places where our horses pastured, twomiles north of camp, some curious action of frost hasconverted the ground into a mass of low grass-crowned hummocks with bare soil between. Alto-gether I have never seen a region which is moretiring to the pedestrian than this, because of theseendless inequalities of the ground, which are halfconcealed by dwarfed trees and a tough underbrush. The large lake near the position of our camp hassome peculiar features. At the time of our arrival astrong wind was driving cakes of ice down the lakeamid whitecaps. The lake seems to rest against asmall glacier at the foot of Mt. Assiniboine where itgets a large part of its water-supply. A large streamenters it at the opposite or north end, and severalothers come in at various points, but we were sur-prised to find no outlet.
