Description
English: The Ruined Portico of Loughcrew House, Oldcastle, County Meath. This was once a grand stately home built in the 1820s by the local landowners, the Napers. The story goes that the owner, who was 'Church of Ireland' generously gave land to Catholics to build their own church after emancipation, the local 'church of Ireland' priest was so angry that he placed a curse on the house and said it would burn down three times - it did - in the 1880s, then in 1956 and then again in the 1960s when the building was finally pulled down - apart from the orangery and stables which now provide living accommodation.... this portico was re-erected from the rubble in the 1990s as an 'eyecatcher'
