Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Ruins of Castle Caldwell - and its history - geograph.org.uk - 1113036.jpg |
English: The Ruins of Castle Caldwell - and its history. The castle stands on an isthmus overlooking Lower Lough Erne. It was built in the first decade of the 17th century by Thomas Blemerhassett on the 1500 acre estate he acquired under the Plantation of Ulster http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/plantation/ . About fifty years later it was purchased by James Caldwell, an Enniskillen merchant whose family came from Prestwick in Ayrshire,Scotland. Unlike many of the old Plantation castles nearby (Tully, Archdale, Monea - see below), James Caldwell's castle survived and remained in his family until 1817 when it passed through marriage to the Bloomfields who retained it to the end of the century. Sadly, by 1900, this three hundred year old castle had become a ruin and is now almost completely overtaken by woodland.
