ROOTS TWO years ago last January LiuChing-an, a teacher of Chineseclassics in the Wuchang Divin-ity-school, was arrested on thecharge of being one Liu Chia-yuin,leader of the revolutionary party in theProvince of Hupeh. Though none whoknew him believed the charge, his pasthistory was most carefully investigatedby some of our best men, and we becamethereby doubly assured that he reallywas the quiet, scholarly, patriotic gentle-man that he had seemed. The Chineseauthorities also investigated, failed toprove even to their satisfaction the orig-inal charge, but, obtaining false testi-mony from a teacher, an acquaintanceof Lius, who was himself under sus-picion, finally condemned him to death.His life was saved at the last moment byan order to Pekin to delay until the casecould be more thoroughly investigated,and his sentence was finally commuted toimprisonment for life.
