The track work as far as Fort Lee, though nominallyalong the .side of the highway, was practically new gradiiig,requiring a large amount of bla.sting as the worn road wastoo crooked to follow. From Fort Lee to Leonia thetrack follows the side of the road, and from Leoniato Englewood the center. At Leonia a grade varyingfrom eight per cent to ten per cent for 1500 ft. is encoun-tered going down. A large amount of macadamizing ofroads is required of the company under its franchises.

Onaccount of the large number ofvertical and horizontal curves inthe track, this construction has averaged about ninetypoles to the mile. About eighty per cent of the pole holeshad to be blasted at an expense of twice the cost of thepoles. Octagonal yellow pine poles were used with tops 340 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XII. No. 6. varying from seven inches to nine inches for different con-structions. The lengths of poles varied from thirty feet tosixty feet, depending on the relative height to track of theground in which the pole was set, the line of the tops ofthe poles being parallel to the surface of the track.
