Thesteam plant, although a very complete one,is for temporary use only, as the companyis developing a water-power which iseventually to furnish power for the entireline, as well as for other industries in theneighborhood. On the completion of thehydraulic plant, now under construction,the steam plant will be used as a reserve. The entire line, including power stations, was installedfor the Mediterranean Railroad Company or to give thecompany its Italian title, Societa per le Strade Ferrate delMediterraneo, by the Compagnie dElectricite Thomson-Houston de la Mediterranee. At present 47 miles of theline are in operation from Milan to Porto Ceresio, but thecompany proposes to extend the electric service to certain branch lines extending from Gallarate to Arona and toLaveno, which will comprise 25 miles more of track. Themaximum schedule speed of the electric cars is from 50 miles to 60 miles an hour.
