he total capacity of the power sta- gine bed, and this space was filled with concrete, in whichwas distributed a liberal quantity of old I-beams andrails, bonding the whole mass of concrete together into athoroughly substantial foundation. The height of the en-gine prevents the operation of a traveling crane throughthe entire length of the building, as was previously permis-sible, so that a new crane was purchased from Maris Broth-ers, of Philadelphia. The erection of the engine, therefore,was made by the aid of cranes on both sides, which worked very satisfactorily. All the en-gines are run condensing.Three Wheeler surface con-densers with Worthingtonpumps are used for the threesmaller vertical engines and aConover condenser with theLake Erie engine. The E. P.Allis engines are each pro-vided with a Reynolds jet con-denser placed in pits at theside of the engine room. Theboiler equipment consists ofsix 250-hp Stirling boilers,two 300-hp boilers of the B. &W. type made by the Ault-

Thepower station is divided by thenew unit into two distinctparts, the front of which con-tains two 1250-hp compoundReynolds-Corliss enginesmade by the E. P. Allis Com-pany, each of which is direct-connected to an 800-kw 12-pole generator. The speed ofthese units is 80 r. p. m. Atthe rear of the power station are three vertical engines of 500 hp each belted to threeGeneral Electric 4-mp, 300-kw generators. These gen-erators run at 400 r. p. m. The engines are from the worksof the Cleveland Ship Building Company, of Cleve-land, Ohio. The new engine is of the vertical compoundtype, made by the Lake Erie Engine Works, and is ratedat 1000-hp capacity when running at 125 r. p. m.
