Again, there are overcome the tendency to shovethe replacers out of position, and also the spinning of wheelsin the attempt to secure, on the flange alone, sufficient frictionto start the ascent, especially in the case of very heavy equip-ment. Another desirable point in the replacer, and one whichwill doubtless meet with considerable favor, is the reductionof the pronounced and abrupt arch at the ends. A meeting of the executive committee of the AmericanStreet Railway Manufacturers Association was held in NewYork, July 7, and a number of important preliminaries in con-nection with the Philadelphia convention next September werearranged. There were present at the meeting Chairman Bradyand Messrs. Carlton, Heulings, McGraw, Martin, Pierce, Ran-dall, Wharton and Baker and President Ely, of the AmericanStreet Railway Association. The resignation of Committeeman W. H. Whiteside, of theAllis-Chalmers Company, was received, and Frank C. Ran-dall, manager of the New York office of the company, waselected in his place. E. H. Baker, of the Galena Signal OilCompany, was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by theresignation of Mr. Randall, as representative of ithe NationalElectric Company.
