Evidence of the daring and skill of the Italianseamen was afforded by two raids into the-enemys bases. On May 28 an Italian torpedoboat approached the entrance to the port ofTrieste, which must have necessitated a strongmine belt being negotiated in the Gulf ofTrieste. Penetrating into the harboiu*, theboat torpedoed and sank a large transport.The Austrians at once turned on their shoresearchlights, but failed to detect the raiderwhile she was within range, and the torpedoboat returned without a scratch. The secondraid was even more bold in conception.
