English: The Tump - An earth-covered hide at College Lake From the Information Board.
The 'Tump' (mound or Hill) is sited on the highest point of the reserve to provide a sheltered elevated overview of the Farmland Wildlife Project 1412559 and the Chiltern Hill landscape. The mound itself consists of thousands of tons of soil, which was left to settle for two years before work could begin on the turf-roofed viewpoint. Roosting chambers for bats have been built into each side of the main chamber and several hidden nest boxes for birds, including Little Owl, have also been built in. Rabbits also appear to be moving in - even on the roof. Sheep will control graze the selected chalk turf to encourage downland flowers and prevent coarse vegetation from obscuring the views. The Tump stands as a monument to the amazing volunteers of College Lake who constructed it. Although few, they represent the many upon which the wildlife trust movement so depends.
