Bethany, Mo., Aug. 16.—WilliamRogers, a farmer near here, returnedhome from town rather late and, inthe rush of doing chores, he left athree-pound package of plug tobaccoon the wagon seat. When he went after it early the nextmorning he found one of his bestmilch cows standing by the wagon,diligently chewing. The cow hadeaten two and a half pounds of thetobacco. A veterinarian was summoned, but the cow died several hoursafterward.—Exchange. The first investment in raisingpork is small and the pig is a quickmoney maker on the farm. Hemultiplies rapidly, and if- we only fur-nish him good pasture, grazing crops,pure water, and a little concentrated feed he wiir rapidly gain weight at a chief demand for labor, is confined to small cost. Bloat—Cause and Treatment Irrigation Throughout the alfalfa-growing sec-tion—and this includes all our re-clamation projects—there is muchcomplaint of serious cases of bloatcaused by grazing alfalfa. Somelosses of stock have occurred, and itis probable that some of our farmersire not making full use of their alfalfapasture is one of our greatest assets,ind we should make the fullest pos-sible use of it, taking the simple pre-cautions necessary to prevent lossfrom bloat. Bloat is the result of fermentationc-f food in the stomach of the animal;:his fermentation causes gases, whichiistend the abdominal cavities. Alfalfacontains certain elements which if;aken in considerable quantities undercertain conditions ferment quickly.Careful observation of alfalfa grazingieads to the conclusion that practical-ly all cases of alfalfa bloat are causeday the following
