The resultof 27 experiments carried on withcattle indicated that it required anaverage of 13 pounds of dry sub-stance to produce one pound increasein live weight. It was found thatsheep required an average of 9.2pounds of dry substance to producea pound of gain, while the hog required but 4.8 pounds of dry sub-stance to produce one pound of in-creased weight. To determine thisresult 33 experiments were carriedon with pigs, and 104 animals werefed out for an average of 58 days. It is little to be wondered at thatthe hog is known as the mortgagelifter because, according to these re-cords, he is able to make one poundof gain on just about one-third theamount of dry food as a steer. Ofcourse, it must be remembered thatcattle can utilize a much cheaperform of food than hogs. Indeed, rea-sonable gains can be made with the Start The New Year Right
