Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Renaissance Splendor: Catherine de’ Medici’s Valois Tapestries. Three of the six Valois tapestries on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. From left to right: Polish Ambassadors, Fontainebleau, and Whale. The tapestries were commissioned by Catherine de' Medici, Queen Mother of France, to commemorate members of her family. They were woven in Brussels in the late 1570s. Since 1589 they have been in the collection of the Medici family in Florence, since 1966 they have been on display in the Uffizi Gallery.

Attaque de Vue devant le château de Fontainebleau, also known as Fontainebleau, depicts a mock battle held in late June 1565 in the city of Bayonne, France, as part of the celebrations that occurred at the end of the 18-month progress around France by the young King Charles IX and Catherine de' Medici.

Fête aux Tuileries en l'honneur des ambassadeurs polonais, also known as Polish Ambassadors, depicts a lavish party given at the Tuileries Palace in Paris in 1573 when a group of high-ranking Polish ambassadors came to elect Henry III to the throne of the Kingdom of Poland.

Fête nautique sur l'Adour, also known as Whale, depicts a banquet given by Catherine de' Medici on June 24, 1565, on an island on the Adour river near Bayonne. As the attendees traveled in boats to the island, music was played and an artificial whale "attacked" the boats.
