Description
English: The William Armstrong Obelisk This memorial in Ettleton Cemetery at Newcastleton is for William Armstrong who was shot by the Rev'd Joseph Smith in 1851. There are three inscribed panels on the memorial and the first panel reads:-

IN THIS SPOT NEAR WHICH REST THE ASHES OF HIS FOREFATHERS IS INTERRED WILLIAM ARMSTRONG OF SORBYTREES WHO TO THE GREAT GRIEF OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WAS SHOT WITHOUT CHALLENGE OR WARNING BY THE REV’D JOSEPH SMITH INCUMBENT OF WALTON CUMBERLAND ON THE NIGHT OF WEDNESDAY TH 18TH OF APRIL 1851 IN THE 38TH YEAR OF HIS LIFE

The second panel reads:-

IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY A NUMEROUS BODY OF FRIENDS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER AS A TRIBUTE OF THEIR RESPECT FOR ONE WHOSE MANLY STRAIGHTFORWARD DISPOSITION GAINED HIM THE LOVE AND ESTEEM OF ALL WHO KNEW HIM MDCCCLII

The third panel reads (unable to make out the final words):-

ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG NEE HALL WIFE OF WILLIAM ARMSTRONG SORBIETREES BORN 11TH SEPTEMBER 1820 AT NEWCASTLETON
