The Greeks venerated the art as an immediate giftfrom the gods, and boasted that Orpheus had tamed wildbeasts, and Amphion barbarians, by the spell of their melo-dies. It w£S Lycurgus and Platos injunction, that musicshould be used as a handmaid to the education of the young ;nay, even the laws were sung to the people. Some historiansdeny that the Romans had any taste for the art; yet we aretold, that songs of praise w-ere sung in honour of Romulus,and, in later days, that dramatic music and concerts were invogue amongst them. In the earliest times, the Gauls hadtheir bards, and the dreaded war-cry of our half-civilised an-cestors was a thrice-repeated ** Hallelujah. The Germansof old, too, believed that songs were sung to their departedheroes in the Walhalla ; and it is notorious that their Braga.was the god of poetry and music.
