Thereis one large room where several studentsare at work, and a number of smallprivate laboratories for exclusive usefor professors or instructors in collegesand academies. Here, too, one meets work with the scalpel and their micro-scope. One studying the nervous sys-tem of the spider crab, the other thatof the jellyfisli, while most of themwere dissecting young dogfishes. Liveand prepared material of the variousforms of marine life were in greatabundance on hand. The former waskept in small aquariums in runningsea water. The Striped Remora. rectangular aquariums and vessels ofany shape, all supplied with smallstreams of running sea water and con-taining all kinds of living material. This laboratory soon proved toosmall, and through the generosity ofsome Bostonian a second laboratory,entirely independent from the onementioned above, was erected. Thisschool, known as the Marine Laboratory,is situated only a few hundred steps fromthe U. S. Fish Commission Station. Itconsists of several spacious two-storybuildings, built for this purpose only. It was our good fortune to meet,among the students, some charmingfriends of ours, who delighted to escortus through the various departments.
