The day was a day of mourningin every city, town and hamlet inthe Union. In Hartford, publicbuildings and homes were drapedin black. Large crowds attendedmemorial services at noon in sev-eral churches. In Washington thousands filedby the casket where it lay in theEast room of the executive man-sion.
