Description
English: The barque Troas

A portrait of the barque ‘Troas’ shown broadside-on approaching Hong Kong. The harbour is shown on the far right, though it is rather out of proportion with the large size of the ship.

The ‘Troas’ was built at Sunderland and from 1861 was commanded by Charles Bradley Dasborough. Initially the mate in the ship, by 1861 he was the captain. It is known to have travelled from Sunderland to Calcutta and back to London between 1862 and 1864 and it was probably on this trip that this painting was commissioned by Captain Dasborough.

The painting is inscribed ‘Ship Troas entering Hong Kong C B Dasborough Comm’.
