m,not a single detachment that I remember of was captured in itsl)l(Kk-)iouse or stockade. With the small force we had it wouldhave been impossible to maintain our mail, telegraph and overlandroutes successfully, if it had not been for our system of block-liousesand stockades, dotted for thousands of miles over each of the over-land Ioiites. It is evidtnt from our experience in the West that ourblock-house and stockade system of defending our lines of commu-nication was a great success, not only as against raids of cavalry, butfrom attacks of infantry and artillery, and saved to us a very largeforce for the field. I left on the line of the railway from ISFashvilleto Athens during the Atlanta campaign only two Eegiments ofnegroes, taking with me my entire Corps, and without the block-liouses to defend the lines from Nashville to Stevenson and Steven-son to Atlanta, it would have taken a thousand men withouthldck-hoiise protection for every hnudjed required with it. GrRENVILLE M. DODGE.
